Ponza
The beautiful island of Ponza is a favourite getaway spot for Romans and the people of Lazio in general.
Located around 50 kilometres from the coast, it can be reached by ferry or hydrofoil from a number of Sea Ports of Lazio including Terracina, Formia and Anzio. The fastest route is by hydrofoil from Terracina, a journey of 50 minutes but only available during the summer when there are also connections via Naples and the islands of Ischia and Ventotene. |
Perhaps the most famous sight in Ponza is Chiaia di Luna; the bay is dominated by a huge cliff that leads straight down to the crystal blue water. During the hottest months of the year you'll find a large number of boats not only in this bay, but all around the island. From Ponza Port there are lots of places where you can rent a boat to drive yourselves, with a skipper or even take part in an organised cruise.
Ponza Port is where the ferries and hydrofoils arrive; its multi-coloured buildings are home to lots of shops, bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a spot of people-watching. Aside from boat rentals and tours, you can also hire various vehicles from scooters to jeeps or cabriolet cars. Most of these vehicles are a bit beaten-up but they are a great way of exploring the island by land.
The favourite pastime in Ponza is sitting on the beach and there are around 10 good ones to choose from; my personal favourites including Cala Feola and Cala Fonte. There are also lots of other bays to discover where you'll find that beautiful-coloured water and views across to the neighbouring islands including Gavi and Zannone.
Tantalising from a distance of just under 10 kilometres is another island: Palmarola. If you've got enough time it's well worth a trip across here as the water is some of the best to be found in Italy. You can attempt this journey by yourselves if you rent a boat but from personal experience, I'd recommend taking one of the organised tours from the port.
Such is my love for Ponza that I have a website dedicated to it where you'll find a lot more information on things to see and how to get there. You can access Ponza Review via the green button below or a little further down this page, find a booking engine for ferry and hydrofoil tickets.
